Customer service means helping customers in person, on the phone or in writing, and solving their problems politely. Contact centres and business process outsourcing (BPO) are among the largest employers of young people in South Africa, especially in Gauteng, Cape Town and Durban.

The lessons are:FoundationsUnderstand what good customer service is and the core skills: listening, empathy, clear speech and patience.Task: Think of two times you received very good and very bad service in South Africa (a shop, clinic, bank or taxi rank). For each, write what the staff member did, how it made you feel, and what you would have done differently.Core skillsPractise handling questions, complaints and difficult customers, and learn how call centres measure performance.Task: Write a short script for handling a complaint (for example a customer whose airtime or order did not arrive): greeting, listening, apologising, solving or escalating, and closing. Then write how you would handle the same customer if they became angry.Applied practiceApply phone and service skills in realistic role-plays like a call centre assessment.Task: Role-play five customer calls with a friend (a question, a complaint, an angry customer, a sale and a call you must transfer). Record two on your phone, score yourself on greeting, listening, tone and solution, and write what you will improve.

The South African route

Contact centre and customer service learnerships fall under the Services SETA, and many BPO employers recruit young people through Harambee and the YES programme. Prove the skill with recorded role-plays, a free certificate of completion and references from any customer-facing work.
