AI literacy means understanding what AI tools can and cannot do, using them safely at work, and knowing the basics of how machine learning learns from data. Most South African office jobs now expect it.

Turn on JavaScript to track your progress. The lessons are:FoundationsUnderstand what AI is, where it is used and where it goes wrong.Task: Pick three tasks from your own life or a job you want (for example writing a CV, summarising a document, planning a budget). Use a free AI tool for each, then write what it got right, what it got wrong, and how you checked it.Core skillsLearn how machine learning learns from data: training, testing, overfitting and bias.Task: Follow a beginner tutorial and train a simple model in a free Google Colab notebook (for example predicting house prices). Write half a page on what data you used, how accurate it was and where it could be unfair.Applied practiceUse AI safely at work: privacy, POPIA, checking facts and writing good prompts.Task: Write a one-page 'AI rules for our office' guide for a small business: what data must never go into a public AI tool, how to check outputs, and three tested prompts that save time.

What competent looks like

Writes clear prompts and improves them step by step
Checks AI output against a reliable source
Knows what personal information must not be shared (POPIA)
Explains training data, models and bias in plain words
Has trained and tested at least one simple model

The South African route

There is no single required qualification. Free certificates such as Elements of AI and Google's AI Essentials (paid, with financial aid) show employers you have the basics. Prove it with a portfolio of real tasks you improved with AI.
