Software developers write the code behind apps, websites and business systems. South African companies, banks and start-ups hire junior developers who can show working projects, not only certificates.

Turn on JavaScript to track your progress. The lessons are:FoundationsLearn how code works: variables, loops, functions and problem-solving in Python.Task: Write a Python program that asks for a list of monthly expenses, then prints the total, the average and the biggest expense. Share the code on GitHub and explain each part in your own words.Core skillsBuild for the web: HTML, CSS, JavaScript and React, plus a back end with Node.js.Task: Build a to-do list app in React that saves tasks, and a small Node.js and Express API that the app talks to. Publish the code on GitHub with a README.Applied practiceWork like a professional developer: Git, testing, deploying and reading other people's code.Task: Build a portfolio project that solves a real local problem (for example a stokvel contribution tracker). Deploy it free on Netlify or Render, write a short case study and link it from your CV.

The South African route

There is no licence needed to work as a developer in South Africa. Employers look at your GitHub and portfolio. Learnerships through the MICT SETA and programmes such as WeThinkCode_ (free) are strong routes in.
