STEM teachers teach science, technology, engineering and maths. South Africa needs many more strong maths and science teachers. Teachers need a teaching qualification and registration with SACE.

Note the topics learners usually find hard.Core skillsLearn how to teach: lesson planning, explaining and checking understanding.Task: Plan a 30-minute lesson on one topic, with a hook, explanation, practice and a five-question check at the end.Applied practiceTeach for real and reflect.Task: Tutor two or three learners for four weeks. Track their marks before and after, and write what teaching methods helped most.

The South African route

Study a BEd or a degree plus a PGCE, then register with SACE. The Funza Lushaka bursary covers teaching studies in priority subjects such as maths and science.
